Exporting Shea Butter from Nigeria

How shea butter leaves Nigeria — classification, load ports, documents and Incoterms — and how to open the right country page.

Summary

Shea butter is exported from Nigeria under HS heading 1515.90, loaded at Lagos, and documented by the exporter; destination duty and registration live on each country's import guide. EMI Agro loads at Apapa (Lagos) and Tin Can Island (Lagos). Use an import guide for duty and registration, and a supplier page for commercial terms.

HS classification

Every market starts from HS 1515.90; the line the importer declares is the national extension published on that country's import guide. The six-digit heading is the Harmonized System class for other fixed vegetable fats and oils (shea butter). It is the same heading on a Nigerian export declaration and on a destination import entry. National administrations then extend the heading to eight or ten digits for duty, preference and statistical reporting. Those national lines are not printed here. They live on the shea butter import guides by country, each checked against that market's tariff database.

Buyers sometimes ask for a single “world HS code” they can paste into every entry. The first six digits can be shared; the rest cannot. Using a neighbour's eight-digit line in the wrong country is a classification error. Open the destination guide for the line the broker will file. This page explains why the six-digit heading does not change.

The botanical source is Vitellaria paradoxa (syn. Butyrospermum parkii), traded as Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter. Those names belong on the specification and the invoice; they do not replace the tariff line. The complete guide to shea butter covers the commodity; this page covers how that commodity leaves Nigeria.

Nigeria export-side overview

Nigerian export control for shea butter runs through NEPC, Form NXP, NESS and NAQS; the step-by-step procedure is on the import-from-Nigeria guide. The exporter — not the foreign buyer — completes those Nigerian registrations and certificates. The Nigerian Export Promotion Council registers the exporter. Form NXP is the Central Bank of Nigeria export-proceeds declaration. The Nigerian Export Supervision Scheme covers pre-shipment inspection. The Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service issues a phytosanitary certificate when the destination asks for one. NAFDAC issues the product export document for a regulated consignment. Nigeria Customs takes the export declaration. Cargo loads at Lagos —Apapa (Lagos) and Tin Can Island (Lagos).

This page names the agencies and one-line roles only. It does not rewrite the ten-step procedure. The full sequence, buyer checks and source notes are on how to import shea butter from Nigeria.

How to use the import-guide hub

Each country import guide answers duty, documents, registration, transit and clearance for one market. The shea butter import guides by country group those pages by region. A page exists only when that market's destination facts have been verified — tariff line, regulator, document list, clearance note and a Lagos transit range read from carrier schedules. Unpublished markets are absent, not marked as coming soon.

Open the guide for the country of discharge, not the country of the buying office, if those differ. The guide will not quote a neighbour's duty or invent a registration route. When a fact cannot be verified against a primary source, that sentence is omitted. Use the guide to brief a forwarder; the authoritative text remains the regulator and the tariff database cited in References on that page.

51 guides are live across 10 regions, listed under destination import guides below.

How to use the supplier hub

An import guide is not a supplier page. The guide is the regulatory and logistics path into one market. A supplier page answers commercial questions for that market: quantity, price basis, packaging and the terms that sit on the pro-forma. City pages, when they exist, add port, inland logistics and local buyer notes only. They do not repeat the national tariff line.

Open the shea butter supplier by country hub when you want commercial terms. Open the import hub when you want duty and registration. Product pages for unrefined Grade A, refined N-RBD and shea press cake stay on specification and application; they do not replace either hub.

Incoterms EMI Agro offers

Incoterms allocate who arranges freight and insurance and where risk passes. EMI Agro quotes the codes below. Definitions sit in the Incoterms glossary. The named port or place is agreed on the pro-forma for that order.

  • EXW — the buyer arranges collection, freight and insurance from the factory.
  • FOB — EMI Agro delivers on board at the named Lagos port; the buyer arranges ocean freight.
  • CIF — EMI Agro arranges freight and insurance to the named discharge port.

Destination import guides

The cards below are the published destination guides. Each card names the market and the first ports of discharge. There is no regulatory prose on a card — open the guide for the tariff line and the regulator.

Supplier pages by market

Supplier pages sit in a separate hub. They answer commercial questions for a market and, where generated, name the cities that have their own logistics notes.

Container configurations

How many drums or cartons fit a twenty- or forty-foot container depends on pack size, palletisation and the weight limit on the lane. That arithmetic lives on the shea export container calculator, not on this page. Use the calculator for a packing plan; use this page to reach the destination guide and the Nigeria export-side procedure. Stuffing is usually witnessed during pre-shipment inspection; the bill of lading then names the load port actually used.
