Shea Butter for Indie Cosmetic Brands
Unrefined Grade A, a first order you can actually afford, and the paperwork your safety assessor will ask for.
Summary
EMI Agro supplies indie cosmetic brands with unrefined Grade A shea butter (INCI: Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter) from its own Ibadan facility, starting with a sample and a first order sized for a launch rather than a container. Every shipment carries a batch Certificate of Analysis. The butter is wild-collected through EMI's cooperative network and pressed in EMI's plant, so the origin story is real and usable. See the complete guide to shea butter and all buyer types we supply.

What matters to indie cosmetic brands
A first order that fits a launch budget and a small batch size — not a twenty-tonne container. Indie cosmetic brands do not fail because they chose the wrong INCI; they fail when the first invoice is larger than the first production run. EMI discusses an entry quantity on the quote so the first drum or carton can sit beside the formula, not in a bonded warehouse.
Unrefined Grade A with the natural colour and scent customers associate with real shea, and consistency between the sample and the first order. If the sample is ivory and the production lot is deep yellow, the brand has a customer-service problem before it has a sales problem. Write colour and odour into the brief you send with the sample request.
Documentation a safety assessor or Responsible Person accepts without chasing: a specification or TDS, a batch COA, the INCI name, and the statements that belong in a Product Information File. EMI issues a COA with every shipment; which further statements travel with your order is confirmed on enquiry.
A traceability story that survives scrutiny: who collected the nuts, where, and that collectors are paid through a cooperative model. 5,000+ women collectors in Kwara, Niger, Kaduna, Kogi supply the kernels EMI presses in Moniya, Ibadan. That is a fact you can check, not a slogan.
A supplier who answers and grows with the brand from sample to pallet to container. The same specification basis — NIS 571:2013 — applies to a small order as to a container. For an indie brand the right shea supplier is the one that will ship a small first order with the same COA and documents it gives a container customer.
Recommended product and specifications
Start with unrefined Grade A shea butter — cold-pressed, wild-collected, ivory to pale yellow, with the natural nutty odour that carries a "real shea" claim. Unrefined butter retains the unsaponifiable fraction that formulators buy shea for; see unsaponifiable matter. The batch free-fatty-acid value is on your COA.
Unrefined Grade A Shea Butter
Cold-pressed, wild-collected Grade A — the usual first buy for indie ranges.
Refined N-RBD Shea Butter
White, odourless N-RBD when the base must carry fine fragrance.
Choose refined N-RBD shea butter when the base must be white and odourless or the fragrance is the product. Many indie cosmetic brands hold both: Grade A for the natural line, N-RBD for the unscented or perfume-led line. For ideas across a range, see uses of unrefined shea butter in cosmetics.

Minimum order, pack formats, lead time, Incoterms and payment are confirmed on the quote for the destination and quantity you name. Shelf life and storage guidance travel with the lot documents. Packaging options sit on the products hub.
From sample to regular supply
Request a sample of unrefined Grade A and say what you are formulating and where you sell. EMI confirms sample size, cost and dispatch on that request.
Approve the sample against the COA, then place a trial order at the entry quantity on the quote. Once the trial is in your products and your assessor is satisfied, move to scheduled repeat orders. The sample-to-container playbook walks the same path for any buyer type.
Documents for CPNP, SCPN and MoCRA
INCI name: Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter. CAS 91080-23-8 and EC 293-515-7 are the identifiers listed on CosIng for this ingredient — confirm them against the current CosIng entry before you print a label. A technical data sheet and a batch COA are the core of the raw-material file; see what EMI's COA looks like. SDS, allergen, heavy-metals, microbiological, origin, animal-testing and GMO statements are requested by most assessors; which of those EMI issues today is confirmed on enquiry.
In the EU, Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 requires a Responsible Person and a Product Information File with a safety report; the finished product is notified through CPNP. The raw-material supplier does not notify. In the UK, the UK Cosmetics Regulation uses SCPN notification via OPSS. In the US, MoCRA requires facility registration and product listing with the FDA; small-business exemptions are for the brand to check, not for EMI to assert. EMI does not notify your product for you — no ingredient supplier can — but it supplies the INCI, specification and COA your Product Information File needs, and discusses the rest of the statement pack on enquiry.
What COSMOS or organic would mean for on-pack claims is explained in shea butter certifications explained. Destination import notes are confirmed on enquiry.
Why EMI Agro for indie cosmetic brands
EMI Agro is a manufacturer, not a trader. The butter is pressed at Moniya Industrial Zone, Moniya–Iseyin Expressway, Ibadan, Oyo State — one party accountable for the lot you put in a cream.
The story you can use is the one EMI can stand behind: wild-collected shea nuts via a cooperative network of 5,000+ women collectors in Kwara, Niger, Kaduna, Kogi. Approved wording and photographs are supplied on request so a brand does not invent a village it has never seen.
A small order sits on the same NIS 571:2013 basis and the same COA format as a container. Certification status relevant to indie cosmetic brands is NAFDAC registered, SON approved, USDA NOP (Organic) in pursuit, EU Organic (EOS) in pursuit, COSMOS in pursuit — never "certified" for a scheme that is still in pursuit. Read the certificates and dates on quality and the company facts on about EMI Agro.
