How the estimate works

Shares are normalised: wᵢ = %ᵢ ÷ Σ %. The tool warns if the total is not 100 and shows the normalised shares. The estimated range is MP_low = Σ wᵢ × MPᵢ,low and MP_high = Σ wᵢ × MPᵢ,high; the midpoint is reported too. The helper estimates a blend's slip melting point as the mass-weighted average of each component's slip-point range — a first approximation that ignores eutectic effects and polymorphism, which is why it reports a range and asks you to confirm by AOCS Cc 3-25.

Hardness is an indicator, not a measurement: hard share is the sum of weights for components whose lower slip point is above 30 °C. At 70 % or more the label is “firm at room temperature”; 40–70 % is “soft solid”; below 40 % is “semi-liquid at 25 °C”.

Triglyceride mixtures are not ideal solutions. Stearic–oleic-rich fats (shea, cocoa, kokum) show eutectic minima at some ratios, so a blend can melt below both components. Shea butter is polymorphic and its slip point drifts with tempering and storage. Waxes and liquid oils are chemically different (wax esters, unsaturated triglycerides) and the linear model is least reliable when they exceed roughly 30 % of the blend — the helper then marks the result low-confidence.

Worked example

Sixty per cent unrefined shea (32–45 °C) plus 40 % cocoa butter (31–35 °C): MP_low = 0.6 × 32 + 0.4 × 31 = 31.6 °C; MP_high = 0.6 × 45 + 0.4 × 35 = 41.0 °C; midpoint 36.3 °C; hard share 100 % → firm. Published work on shea–cocoa blends shows softening at intermediate ratios, so the real slip point may sit below this range; run AOCS Cc 3-25 on the actual blend. Assumptions and limits

The model is linear mixing of literature ranges. Batch values vary — use the COA slip point for your shea via Custom. Slip point is not complete melt point and is not drop point. The helper does not model tempering or cooling rate, and it is not for emulsions or products with water. Waxes raise the feel of firmness more than the slip point suggests. Liquid oils above about 30 % are flagged as low confidence. There is no safety or regulatory content — this is a texture screen.

What your estimate means for a shea formulation

Indicative targets from formulation texts: a lip balm is typically built to hold shape above body-heat handling (a low end well above 40 °C); a body butter should stay firm at 25–30 °C storage but spread on skin; cocoa-butter-equivalent work needs cocoa-butter-compatible melting — see the CBE glossary. Because the model is linear, shifting mass from the lowest-melting to the highest-melting component raises the midpoint by a predictable amount; the helper prints the percentage points per degree when you enter a target.

Unrefined Grade A and refined N-RBD slip ranges differ; choose the shea you will actually buy on the Grade A product page or refined N-RBD. Always confirm with a slip-point test on the actual blend — AOCS Cc 3-25.
