Slip Melting Point

Also written as: SMP, slip point, open-tube melting point

Summary

Slip melting point (SMP) is the temperature at which a column of solidified fat in an open capillary tube begins to rise (slip) when warmed in a water bath. It describes when shea butter starts to soften rather than when it is fully liquid.

Natural fats melt over a range, so spec sheets quote the slip point or a drop point rather than a single sharp melting point; buyers comparing suppliers must check which method is quoted. Slip melting point drives formulation feel — lip balm hardness, body butter set — and hot-climate shipping behaviour.
