Three axes decide the brief. Occlusivity and slip: petrolatum is the hydrocarbon film, dimethicone is the silicone slip, shea is the melting plant butter. Stability: shea carries iodine value 52–66 and oxidises; the synthetics do not — see iodine value. Claim language: shea has 4–11 % unsaponifiables and a plant INCI; the synthetics have neither — see unsaponifiable matter and melting point.
Synthetic emollients have no unsaponifiable fraction and no saponification value; that is why they are more stable, and why they cannot do shea's natural-claim job.
When to choose shea butter
- A natural, plant-derived butter on the INCI and in the marketing story.
- Briefs that specify unsaponifiables.
- Natural-origin positioning — shea is an eligible plant-butter input class; EMI's COSMOS status is in-pursuit, not certified.
- Indie and clean-beauty brands that cannot put petrolatum or dimethicone on the label.
- A rich, melting skin feel that a hydrocarbon film or a silicone slip does not provide.
Choose shea butter when the label, the unsaponifiables or a natural-origin claim are part of the product. That is a plant-derived butter on the INCI, a brief that specifies 4–11 % unsaponifiables, or a natural-origin positioning. When to choose synthetic emollients
- Maximum occlusivity (petrolatum) on a broken-barrier or very dry-skin chassis — physical property only.
- Slip, playtime and a non-greasy afterfeel (dimethicone) that shea will not give at any load.
- Lowest cost and long oxidative shelf life (mineral oil, petrolatum) in a mass-market lotion.
- Tight comedogenicity control when a published assay flags a natural butter or a dry ester.
- Batch-identical sensory in every drum, independent of harvest year.
Choose a synthetic emollient when occlusivity, slip, cost or oxidative stability is the job and a natural INCI is not. Petrolatum is the maximum-occlusivity ointment base — a physical property, not a skin-condition claim. Dimethicone is slip, playtime and a non-greasy afterfeel that shea will not give at any load. Mineral oil and petrolatum win on unit cost and oxidative life in a mass-market lotion. Choose the synthetic a published assay supports when comedogenicity control is tight. Batch-identical sensory, harvest year after harvest year, is the manufacturing reason.
Can you substitute one for the other?
Partial. Hybrid chassis: typical practice 2–8 % shea beside the synthetic that does the occlusive or slip job. Not 1:1 for petrolatum or dimethicone.
Shea butter can sit beside a synthetic emollient; it cannot take petrolatum's or dimethicone's job at the same use level. Shea does not replace petrolatum 1:1 as an occlusive film, dimethicone 1:1 as a slip agent, or mineral oil 1:1 as a cheap, stable oil phase. Typical practice is a hybrid: 2–8 % shea butter in an emulsion that still uses a synthetic emollient for occlusivity or slip.
Refined N-RBD shea is the closer sensory match to a neutral synthetic than unrefined Grade A — see refined N-RBD shea butter.
Formulation notes
Hydrocarbons and silicones do not go rancid; shea butter's shelf life is still a free-fatty-acid and peroxide-value problem. Shea is a triglyceride plus unsaponifiables; petrolatum and mineral oil are hydrocarbons; dimethicone is a silicone polymer; isopropyl myristate is an ester of myristic acid. They do not share a saponification or iodine value — those shea rows are blank on the synthetic columns. See peroxide value.
Adding petrolatum, mineral oil or dimethicone typically takes a formula out of most 100 % natural-origin claims; isopropyl myristate is still synthetic. EMI Agro supplies unrefined Grade A and refined N-RBD shea butter; we do not supply petrolatum, dimethicone, mineral oil or isopropyl myristate.
