Cold-Pressed

Also written as: cold pressing, cold-pressed shea butter, mechanical expression

Summary

Cold-pressed shea butter is extracted from dried kernels by mechanical pressing alone, with no solvent and no external heat beyond the friction of the press. The method keeps the butter's natural colour, aroma and unsaponifiable fraction largely intact.

Cold-pressed describes the extraction step only — it says nothing about kernel quality, so a cold-pressed butter can still have high free fatty acid if the nuts fermented before pressing. That is why the free fatty acid specification matters more than the press label. Traditional hot-water extraction, by contrast, involves roasting and boiling the kernel paste.
