Oils & Fats Unit Converter

Mass, price-per-unit, package and volume conversions for the oils and fats trade, using exact statutory factors. Currency-agnostic. Runs offline.

Summary

Four panels convert mass (kg, lb, tonne, short ton, ounce), price per unit, packages (drums, cartons, IBCs) and litres to kilograms at a density you can change. For traders, brokers and US or Canadian buyers. Factors are exact: 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg; 1 short ton = 907.18474 kg. Currency is unchanged.

The calculator

How the conversions work

Every mass unit is defined in kilograms. Conversions go through kg: value in kg = value × kilograms per unit; value out = that figure ÷ kilograms per output unit. The tool never chains rounded steps.

Derived: 1 t = 2,204.6226 lb; 1 t = 1.1023113 short tons.

One pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, so a tonne is 2,204.62 pounds and a US short ton (2,000 lb) is 907.18 kilograms.

Price per output unit = price per input unit × (kg per output unit ÷ kg per input unit). Per lb → per kg, multiply by 2.2046; per tonne → per kg, divide by 1,000; per short ton → per tonne, multiply by 1.1023. The converter changes the unit, not the currency. Package conversions divide mass by net mass per unit and round up when going from mass to units; the reverse is exact.

Volume ↔ mass uses mass (kg) = volume (L) × density (kg/L). The default density is 0.9 kg/L, typical 0.90.92 for liquid shea butter at filling temperature. Solid butter at ambient is denser and contains air pockets — always trade by mass. Physical properties of shea sit on the complete guide to shea butter.

Worked examples

Mass: 2,000 lb → 907.18 kg → 0.907 t → 1 short ton exactly. Price: 3.20 per lb → 7.05 per kg → 7,054.79 per tonne → 6,400.00 per short ton. Package: 20 t → 100 drums of 200 kg, or 800 cartons of 25 kg, or 23 IBCs at 0.90 kg/L (900 kg each; 22.22 rounded up). Volume: 1,000 L at 0.90 kg/L → 900 kg; at 0.92 kg/L → 920 kg.

Assumptions and limits

Pounds and ounces are avoirdupois, not troy. The short ton is the US ton. A UK long ton of 1,016.05 kg is not included — do not use this tool for long-ton quotes. Tonne means metric ton. Display rounding is 2 decimal places for kg, lb and price, 3 for tonnes and short tons, 1 for ounces; internal arithmetic keeps full precision and copied results carry 6 significant figures. Package conversions round units up because you cannot ship 22.22 IBCs. There is no currency conversion and no VAT or duty. Density is temperature-dependent.

What the numbers mean for a shea butter order

A buyer comparing a US quote per pound with a per-tonne quote should convert to the same unit and the same Incoterm before comparing — see Incoterms. The package count feeds the shea export container calculator. Typical order sizes in each packaging are discussed on unrefined Grade A and refined N-RBD. This page does not quote prices. Enter oil mass in kilograms in the caustic soda dose calculator after converting.
